Streamline Safety Cases for Advanced Nuclear Reactors

Fit-for-Purpose Safety Analysis Reports (SARs)

Our experts have developed unique expertise to help organizations involved in the design and operation of Advanced Nuclear Reactors (ANRs) and Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) to enhance the ‘usability’ of the Safety Analysis Reports (SAR) during plant design and operation with the use of Bowtie diagrams.

Converting Fault Schedules (FT) into Bowtie diagrams

We support Fault Schedules (FS) with Bowtie diagrams. We provide draft Bowtie diagrams for Major Fault Scenarios, including both Design Basis Accidents (DBAs) and Design Extension Conditions (DECs). These diagrams are ready to use for conduct interactive Bowtie workshops with the involvement of designer's staff (e.g. responsible engineers, safety case leads and other Subject Matter Experts).

Enhancing the 'usability' of Operational SARs

We help both prospective licensees and organizations involved in the operation of  ANR and SMR to: a) carry out Bowtie workshops to develop technical capabilities and competence in the various engineering and design authority disciplines (technical topic leads, SAR chapter leads and operating personnel) and b) enhance usability of their SARs during plant operations.

Why choose us?

SARs for ANR and SMRs

We have successfully converted Fault Schedules (FS) into Bowtie diagrams for Major Fault Scenarios, including Design Basis Accidents (DBA) and Design Extension Conditions (DEC). Examples of ANRs and SMRs for which Bowties have been developed are:

  •  NuScale SMR: Loss of Primary Coolant Inventory through RPV injection line break into the CNV.
  • AP-1000: Large and Small Break LOCAS (LB LOCAs and SB LOCAS).
  • UK ABWR: High Pressure Core Flooder (HPCF) system line break.
